vol.59 「危険いっぱいの自然とは何ですか」との質問に答えて

前回、危険いっぱいの自然に学び、子供の頃から危険予知能力を身につけさせたらと書きましたら、
「危険いっぱいの自然とは」どんな体験をしたのですかと聞かれました。
「自然は美しく素晴らしい。四季のある日本は特に。だからこそ俳句や童謡が美しい」とのご意見です。
勿論私も同感です。一方で、危険も多く自然は奥が深く、学びの宝庫との認識です。

私は子供の頃から、川や海、野や山でよく遊びました。
時局がら戦争ごっこなどして崖から転び落ち、竹株や植物の棘が刺さり、痛い目にあいました。
網で川魚をすくい、また潮干狩りや魚釣りで岩場を駆け巡り、青海苔で足を滑らせ、度々怪我をしました。
海で波にのまれて溺れたことや、船で沖に出て急に風が強まり流されて、九死に一生を得たこともありました。

野山ではヤマモモや柿の木によく登り、枝が折れて危ない目にもあいました。
メジロやウサギや鶏を飼い、メジロはモズに、ウサギや鶏は獣に襲われて可哀そうなことをしました。
家に巣をかけたツバメや鶏の卵が蛇に飲み込まれる光景を幾度も見たものです。
戦後十数年の間、無用心のために犬を飼っていましたが、３匹とも車にはねられました。
今でも埋葬した場所に行くと、路上で無言になった悲しい姿を思い出してしまいます。

近所のおばさんがハミ（ハブ）にかまれて命を落とたと聞き、
河川の整備が進まなかった為か、洪水の度に水にのみ込まれて川に死者が出、
田畑の草焼き中に燃え広がり、火消しに努めた老夫婦が焼死することも近所で起こりました。
これらの私の体験は危険を予知する能力を身につける上で、とても役に立ったと考えています。
